I have been trying to eat healthier lately. One thing I am trying to stay away from is artificial colors and sweeteners. The problem comes with yogurt. Most yogurts in ready-to-serve packages are loaded with artificial stuff, but I don't like plain yogurt.
For the past few weeks I have been using plain yogurt and mixing it to my taste. I thought I would share how to have great, healthy yogurt and save money too!
I found some great containers. They are made by Ball (the canning people) and they have plastic freezer jars. They are 8 ounces (just a little bigger than those cute yogurt containers you spend 50-80 cents on at the store) and have a screw on lid. I originally bought them when I made baby food for my son and now they are my yogurt containers. I found them at Walmart, but here is a link to the website where you can also buy them http://www.freshpreservingstore.com/products/ball_jars_lids/freezer_jars. One hurdle to making your own mixed yogurt is taking the time. I found that if I buy a large container (32 ounces) and spend 5 minutes portioning the yogurt between the cups on grocery day, it saves me time and I actually eat the yogurt. Things have to be easy for me to follow through!
#1 Spoon about a 1/2 cup of yogurt into the cup (a little more than half full) add 1/4 cup frozen berries or fruit (thawed if you are going to eat right away) and a little bit of sweetner (sugar, agave, stevia, or honey) Then stick in your fridge for when you want a treat.
The cost? You will be pleasantly surprised.
Yogurt (32 ounces) $2.50
Berries (1 lb) $3.00 (you will only use about 1/2 a bag)
Makes 8 servings...less than 50 cents each. Less than the price of small yogurts, AND you control what you put in. I use Nancy's Organic yogurt, but you could make these yogurts for about 40 cents using generic yogurt or yogurt on sale. What a deal!
